The Most Powerful Superfood?
(3-5 min read)
In recent years Matcha has seen mass adoption by the health and wellness industry. Even though this wonderful tea has been part of human culture for thousands of years, never before have we been able to fully understand (scientifically) it's capabilities for the human body. Albeit, there have been important figures like the Buddhist monk Eisai who wrote of its benefits in his book 'Drinking Tea for Health' in the year 1211.
To be clear, most tea studies that we read about are indeterminate because research specific to teas and long term benefits didn't begin until the mid to late 20th century. Since the studies can take decades, a lot of the research is specific to components found in tea that have been researched such as catechins, polyphenols, and more.
According to medical studies researched by Piedmont, Harvard and others, Matcha has about three times the antioxidant power of green tea because you are drinking the entire leaf (in powder form) instead of steeping it in hot water. Although drinking Matcha may dehydrate you because of its high caffeine levels, Matcha's benefits are abundant. Due to Matcha's high levels of catechins (antioxidants found in Matcha, especially EGCG), polyphenols, L-Theanine. + other amino acids, caffeine, vitamins and more, studies have shown that drinking Matcha may:
- Help lower blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol
- Boost ones immune system
- Slow down the growth of tumors (prevents cancer growth)
- Protect cells from DNA damage
- Help slow bacterial grown in the mouth that causes plaque, cavities, and gum disease
- Give energy and help focus without the anxiety, jitters, or crash
- Naturally boost digestion and metabolism helping burn calories
- Lower risk of heart attack and stroke
- Help keep one calm
- Help with Alzeihmers, Parkinsons, and overall brain health
- Improve your skin
- Have big time anti-inflammatory effects helping with joint and nerve damage, arthritis and much more
- Improve insulin sensitivity and protect against diabetes
As more studies continue to come out about the effects of Matcha, the more fascinated we are by how powerful this tasty green tea is for ourselves and the world. So what's next?
Let us know what you think about these incredible discoveries and your thoughts on how Matcha affects your mind+body+spirit.
